where should SMOKE alarms be placed?
You should install a smoke detector in hallways and within 3 metres of bedrooms. A smoke alarm should also be fitted in your living room and a heat alarm should be fitted in the kitchen area.
HOW SHOULD I TEST MY SMOKE ALARMS?
Firstly any smoke alarm should be maintained according to manufacturer’s instructions. Additionally:
Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button
Make sure everyone in the home understands the sound of the smoke alarm and knows how to respond
Smoke alarms with non-replaceable batteries are designed to remain effective for up to ten years
If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away
Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year
Always replace a battery using one specific to the brand and existing model
